Where to go after CDS?

I barely have my feet wet as CDS nurse (inpatient) with only a 1 1/2 years of experience in this position. While I do really enjoy this job and the benefits, I'm not sure that I see myself doing this until I retire in 20 years. I think my biggest gripe is that I am often ignored by the physicians. We have a few physicians that refuse to answer clarifications and there is no accountability. I'm not sure that I can continue to chase down doctors (remotely via laptop) for the same things over and over. So I thought I would reach out to my fellow CDS out there, what are some roles that I might be able to transition to down the line with my CDS experience? I plan on staying in this role for a few more years because I do enjoy it and I am gaining tons of experience but I just don't think I can do this forever.

  • I understand that feeling. I try to communicate to anyone that will listen to always be looking for the next opportunity. The really 'cool' thing about CDI is that it is evolving into so many different areas.

I took the route of education and enjoy teaching CDI concepts through my position with ACDIS and HCPRo. Many organizations have created new positions such as CDI Educators, Auditors, Data Analysts, Denials specialists, and roles that focus on quality reporting. CDI is expanding into a number of different settings to include the outpatient setting, rehab, psychiatric, pediatrics, obstetrics, LTAC, SNF etc. Each of these different settings present with different processes, focus and opportunities.

With the introduction of AI there are opportunities in developing workflow tools, and applications.

You also have mobility in your personal choices with remote opportunities.

My advice would be to network professionally, through avenues like this Forum, LinkedIn, local ACDIS Chapters etc. You will see many opportunities allowing you to grow beyond your present situation.

  • Thank you so much for this detailed response. I am going to work on networking as I agree that it is really important. I will also look into the other opportunities that you mentioned so that I can keep an eye out for something that my spark my interest. I greatly appreciate your insight.
