Clinical Documentation Opportunities in the Emergency Room

Is anyone staffing their Emergency Department with clinical documentation specialist to help with documentation for those patients that are being admitted? If so, how are you staffing? 24/7?

We actually have an RN coder who codes in the ED. Days M-F.

  • I would be interested in knowing what the RN role in the ER would be. I find it's hard enough getting documentation information with the H/P on board; is there enough data in the ER to work with? OTOH, if it's a viable concept, it might be very useful in a large hospital like mine in heading off problems at the pass.

This is a multipart message in MIME format.

The concept I have seen/would like, is more a quality role. The CDS would
be based in the ED, responsible for assisting with all of the following:
    POA
    HAC
    Medical Necessity
    Core Measures
    Pressure ulcers
    Cauti
The CDS would have the ability to documenting the record because they
would NOT be creating a DRG, they would initiate a worksheet with all
pertinent data, but not assign DRG's, therefore not have a conflict of
    interest.

  • Thanks, Susan. We have been very busy lately gearing up to add HACs/PSIs/POA, etc. to our bailiwick, and I am looking for ways to keep myself busy and interested, so I might work this up for our bosses. Appreciate the ideas.
