CCDS Certification

I have not worked as a documentation specialist for approx. 2 years now and I am preparing to go for my CCDS certification so I can get back in to CDI. I have the 2012 CCDS exam study guide, 2011 CDI Pocket Guide,and my old CDI notebook. In addition, I follow the postings on CDI Talk/Blog. Are there any additional resources that I should be reviewing in preparation for the test ?

    If I were you, and had the access to the ACDIS, I would go on there and read everything on the site. If you have access to and of the HCPRO BOOT CAMP training books, they are valuable too.

    I was also under the impression you could only test after 2 years of CDI experience (unless they changed that). How long were you a CDI before? You may want to find out if the 2 years experience rule has changed, and if not, does the experience have to be current. Just FYI!

    I think the 2 years rule goes into effect in January.

    When I took the test, the one thing that surprised me was how many of my questions were related to labs. Make a quick table for reference in your DRG book :)

    Check on the ACDIS website under CERTIFICATION and requirements. There is a list of requirements for a 2 year CDI test, and 3 routes for the ONCE year CDI-looks like a more extensive list of other requirements than the 2 year CDI. Just wanted you to know up front! GOOD luck!

    I THINK THERE MUST BE SEVERAL EDITIONS OF THE TEST, AS MINE ONLY HAS 1-2 LAB VALUES!

    Maybe it was just me, but I had several questions where they would provide lab values and ask what the probable condition was as well (of course) as labs being included as clinical indicators in other questions. They were not obscure labs; Troponin, BNP, Creatinine/GFR along with basic CBC/CMP. What it really made me realize was that aside from the basic CBC/met panel, I am overly dependent on the fact that abnormal labs are flagged in the EMR. I know what the abnormal means, but I may not know the precise value that is 'abnormal'.

    It's not that there were a ton of these questions. Maybe 3? It's just that I had not reviewed that info at all and overall I felt the test was very simple so those stood out to me because I had to think about them. Had I just made a table in my book with the normals, they would have been a piece of cake.

    Thank you all for responding to my post. I appreciate all the suggestions. Now just need a younger brain!!! I did not realize how much I would miss CDI until I left the department... I continue to keep my ACDIS membership current and try to stay up to date with all the changes.

    Just to make clear we are talking about CCDS not CCS.

    But - If you mean CCS, once you pass you are good for both I-9 & I-10.  You will need to turn in 20 CEU's & two recertification tests every 2 years. However, 18 of your CEU's must be I-10 related & turned in no later than 12/31/2014. They can be in addition to or included in your 20. After that, it will be standard CEU's requirements.

    I have heard from my coworkers that the recent recert test which came out in September (due by March 31st 2014) does have I-10 questions.

    The CCS test will be I-10 applicable in April 2014.

    So really - now is the time to get your CCS if you want it.

    Not sure how ACDIS will handle I-10 and the CCDS exam.

    The plan (I believe, if someone from the CCDS Committee want to weigh in) is to begin updating questions in 2014 and rolling out an updated exam next summer.

    I just took my CCDS exam last week and there were a number of questions on data analysis, program metrics for success as well as information on denials. That is something I don't do in our program, so that was a little difficult. We have an outside organization that provides our statistics and the Case Manager dept takes care of the denials. So if you aren't involved in that area, definitely brush up on that information.

    The great thing is, I PASSED! Yay!!
