Regarding ICD 10 training

Hi Everyone,

Has anyone taking any education in preparing for ICD 10 pertaining to the CDI role?

I have taken the HCPRO/ACDIS 2 day Boot Camp and I highly recommend it.

Our CDI and coding staff brought the ICD-10 for Coding Professionals Boot Camp to our facility. I recommend that! It was not over our heads and we had not had any formal coding training previous to this

  • We have sampled a variety of things (email me if you want details). My personal feeling is that the education I have seen so far is not very specific for CDI. There is often a lot of education regarding code expansion with less discussion about what will/will not have impact (SOI/ROM, etc). Since the Code expansion is HUGE we need to know which diagnoses will have impact either on ROI/ROM, DRG's, etc or what specificity is required for common procedures to ensure they can be coded in a timely fashion. This provides focus.
I am working quite a bit in I-10 now in devising education for CDI and MD's and am learning a lot but it has mostly be deep in the code books type of stuff.

My hope is that as we get closer to implementation, education programs offered will become more refined and great education will be available.

  • We have teamed up with our HIM dept and have been having a home grown ICD 10 training which started with pathophysiology refresher courses and now has moved into the ICD 10 information. We are trying to include information for the CDS. My colleague and I attended the 2 day ACDIS ICD 10 Boot Camp 2 years ago and that was very helpful. We also just started with the Haugen group who will be holding our formal organization training. They have modules you complete on your own as well as mandatory trainings we will need to attend over the next 6 months. We just had our kick off with them on Wednesday so let the training begin!

  • We are just finishing the A&P anatomy modules through HCPRO. We will be doing their general ICD-10 bootcamp and also one that is CDI specific.

  • We are just starting to get involved with ICD -10 training, with Sentara (since we just completed our Merger with them). There are only 2 CDS's in our hospital (we are a small hospital) and our program was already-I think-behind what most of you seem to be doing as CDS's. We review charts/records on the floor-we are half/half electronic/paper. So we are still fighting that battle. My biggest concern now with having another hospital come in to show us how to do things is that we do not have a big emphasis on CDI /Coder reconciliation- how do most of you out there do this? I believe we will be changing the program we use-but right now we use our CDCI strategizer while reviewing charts and occasionally use 3M to check our DRG.

    Thanks,
    Deb
