Hypotension

We are curious as to what code others would assign in a scenario where the physician has documented post-operative hypotension. A query was issued to determine if the wording of "post-operative" was a complication from the procedure or if meaning post-operative time period. The physician chose post-operative time period, not a complication.

What ICD 9 code should be issued?

Thanks,
Krystle

WELL, by nature, post-operative time period can mean "years" etc. There is no time limit so long as that is how he clarified it. In this case though, it sounds like he is considering this in the post-op period but NOT caused by the operative experience. So, hypotension (without being a complication of surgery) should be coded.

I would use iatrogenic hypotension (458.29). The 3M grouper takes you also to iatrogenic if you select postop hypotension.
