How to get into CDI?

Hi everyone!

I am working on an article for the CDI Journal about how someone can get in to the CDI field. As CDI specialists, I would love your feedback and advice for those interested in staring their CDI career. Please comment or e-mail krushlau@hcpro.com to schedule a phone interview.

Thank you for your time!

If you are experienced RN or inpatient coder who has CCS certification and 3-5 years of inpatient experience, have this "investigative" type of personality, and do not afraid of doctors :) you have a good chance to join CDIS family! Start from your HR or your employer intranet, talk to CDIS nurses on the floor, ask them to show what they are doing on everyday bases, and contact their managers or HR department if you wish to become one of them.
I started my CDIS career 10 years ago having RHIT and CCS-P, and working as Physician billing ER coding auditor for 7 years prior. I had no experience talking to the doctor nor inpatient coding experience. I was trained by the nurse for 3 weeks and started my journey as CDIS. In 2 years got promoted to CDI coordinator of 6 CDIS and 1 hospital. In 5 years, after our HIM department got centralized and we acquired 5 more facilities, and I've got position of CDI manager acquiring 12 more specialists. I love my job, no matter how hard it is with remote CDIS, traveling between al 6 hospitals (thanks God they are all local), and how thin I spread myself out. I have great nurses/coders team and am very proud to lead it. Still am learning a lot from all of them every day!
