PICC line placement ICD-10 PCS

Hi Everyone,

What ICD-10 PCS code do I use if the catheter tip ends up in the Cavoatrial Junction? (The CAJ is the joint between the Superior Vena Cava and the Atrium.

Appreciate any suggestions.

Interested as well and how would you code if they did both fluoro and ultrasound as I10 makes you choose one or the other?

I have been using the code for superior vena cava figuring that if it ends at the junction, it is not actually in the atrium.

I don't know if this is correct reasoning but it is the best I have until further direction is provided. What do you think?

In this case they did use both fluroscopy and ultrasound guidance. I agree this I a good one to submit to Coding Clinic.

If they used both, I would code both.

We use 3M encoder and it asks if you wish to code radiologic guidance. I don’t see why you can't code both as radiologist states both were used in the report.

I don't think that would be the case since the insertion code is only used once. A guidance code is used twice, one for each type used.

    What do others think?

  • I agree with Sharon as far as insertion code x 1 and guidance code x 2.
I have a somewhat related question... is your facility planning to code the imaging (fluoroscopy and/or ultrasound) for line insertions for Inpatient stays?

    Thanks,
    Donna

    Yes we are also.

I did submit a question to Coding Clinic yesterday. I'll post the answer when I receive it.
