afib

Wondering if anyone is having difficulty with coding afib as a principle diagnosis when it is new onset. The definitions aren't specific for someone who has not had afib before. Should we query every afib that is unspecified.

Rosalie - I brought this issue up to the Coordination and Maintenance Committee
along with recommendations for modification of the code sets. The September
22-23 Minutes of Proposals are on the web. Here you'll see the erroneous model
they took from my proposed codes, but new onset or initial episode of atrial
fibrillation will have a code soon. I have the American College of Cardiology
on my side honchoing this. It should read Atrial fibrillation initial episode
and then Chronic atrial fibrillation with its four models of paroxysmal,
persistent, long-standing and permanent. Also there will be a digit for
association with mitral valve disease or not. Stay tuned.
