Diabetes and gas gangrene

We had a case study looking at a patient with diabetes and a dx of gas gangrene. Combination codes for dm w gangrene lead to Diabetic Peripheral angiopathy with gangrene.   The fact this particular patient is defined with gas gangrene is significant and we feel it should be coded additionally? I couldn't locate any coding rules or guidance that would say that isn't appropriate, however I also couldn't find any guidance that said it is appropriate.. any advice is appreciated.. thanks!

  • There is a coding clinic that clarifies this.     ICD-10-CM/PCS Coding Clinic, Fourth Quarter ICD-10 2017 Page: 102.  It suggests coding both the DM with gangrene and the additional code for gas gangrene to fully describe the condition.  Hope that helps!
