Attempting to transition from bedside to CDI

Hi, I want to step away from the bedside and into the field of Clinical Documentation Improvement. My ultimate goal is to work in auditing and compliance with my MSN. I have been working in Acute Rehabilitation for the last 3 years and have a little experience in Case Management. I currently have a BSN and will finish my MSN next fall.

Where is the best place for me to begin among the CDI resources? Both the Apprenticeship and the boot camp are within my budget, but would one be more useful for my situation than the other? Thank you for your time.

  • I would recommend the CDI Boot Camps...there are several.  The Fundamental Basics of CDI Bootcamp provides a concise and helpful overview of the CDI process.   Our team attended the Boot Camps, and many of us have earned the CCDS,too.  Best luck...be patient with yourself, it is quite the journey.
  • Does anyone have any recommendations for text books (printed or electronic) to train new CDI Specialists?

I don't know about training, but the CDI Pocket guide is helpful.  We utilized the boot camps in training staff and they are great.
  • Thank you for the advice and tips!

Hi, yes the ACDIS book titled "The Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialist's Complete Training guide" is very helpful.
