Admission for chemotherapy. Chemo not given
A patient was admitted for chemotherapy, but coded and died prior to administration of chemotherapy. I have checked the coding clinics and have found no guidance.
Is the code for admission for chemotherapy still applicable if the chemotherapy was not given?
Thank you in advance for any insights.

The ICD-10-CM Official Guidelines do not require that therapeutic interventions be completed before a diagnosis can be reported. A diagnosis documented by the provider and meeting UHDDS reporting criteria remains reportable even when the patient leaves against medical advice or expires prior to completion of the intended treatment...so although this is not chemo encounter specific guidance, I think it would still apply if the plan was to be admitted for chemo but they passed before the treatment could be carried out.
