re: Chronic respiratory failure.

Please clarify if a patient is admitted with H/O copd and is O2 dependent, is it to be assumed that these patient always carry a history of Chronic Respiratory failure.

When I see this presentation, I also check to see if they have a CO2 and if supportive. I do usually ask for clarification, and often get a positive response from the physician.

Talking to our pulmonologist here, even he isn't willing to call it chronic respiratory failure, and he's fairly open minded about things like this. I'd query for clarification.

Our pulmonologist will not give a diagnosis of Chronic resp failure either, even with a query. I am not sure why the "stigma" with this.

So far we have had suggest with querying. Our pulmonologist felt that if a patient is on O2 continuously because of severe COPD, the patient has Chronic Respiratory Failure.
