Cardioversions

Hi I'm not sure how many work with Case Management at their hospitals, I do and the Case Managers are saying that patients that come for elective Cardio versions should be outpatient medical. In the past these patients have been ICU Observation. I would appreciate any input. Thanks

    Elective Cardioversions are outpatient status/ tele bed unless develop secondary complications that screen in as inpatient under Inter Qual criteria.

    In my experience, cardio-version patients are outpatient medicals.

    If the procedure is on the Inpatient only list-- it should always be inpatient. If it is not on that list it can be inpatient or outpatient-- It would depend on the circumstance of admission and rather it meets medical necessity for an Inpatient admit. It aso depends on the hospital policy and bylaws.

    There is a MLN Matters article on the CMS wecsite (#SE1037) that describes the medical necessity criteria that is assessed other than just Interqual for determining the Inpatient decision.
