CDI in the outpatient setting

I am interested in knowing if any hospital systems have started or are discussing the idea of CDI in the outpatient setting: in particular hospital owned clinics.

I've also seen a few blogs on this and articles at various times and am also interested if anyone out there is doing this.

    Thanks in advance

Doing a quick review, I found a presentation on outpatient CDI from the 2011 annual conference and a Q&A from CDI week last year on outpatient CDI. I still very much want to see if anyone is doing it for outpatient hospital run clinics. That is about 90% of our business here.

Yes, it is being done at a healthcare system and the program is very successful.
  • I am interested in learning more about this. What is the healthcare system that already has a program established. Do you also look at observation status? We recently started to do concurrent review in the ED and would like to talk to those that have an established program.

I am not sure who replied to this, but could you tell me what healthcare system, or email me personally at lhaynes@lhs.org?

It sounds like this topic is an interest to many. Could we keep the information coming in CDI Talk or maybe post it in the ACDIS website for all of us to review?

I will talk to ACDIS about the best way to keep this conversation going forward. As we test the concept of CDI in the outpatient clinic arena, I would be more than happy to keep everyone updated on our progress.

  • We would like the information as well. We are trying to branch out of our comfort zone-MCR inpatient, and see all payers, outpatient services and the ED.

We originally started with 4 staff and saw MCR/BC but due to budget cuts we lost a CDI and BC-go figure.

Administration has now seen the error of their ways and gave us back a CDI and PRN to help get education back on track. So we are trying to formulate a business plan for expansion. Our hospital also contracts with smaller facilities for management and we want to get into that door as well. Spread the wealth we say.
