I voice your sentiments too! Happy nurses week! I know there is a general consensus at our facility from many different areas that I am “no longer a nurse” now that I do not work on the floor caring for the patients. (one provider actually said that to me) HOWEVER, having said that, many days, I feel more like a “nurse” in the role of a CDI-(and feel like I am making a bigger picture impact for our institution and patients), than if I were starting an IV or changing a dressing. Yes, many days I do miss those days where I had direct patents care as well, but have to remind myself-as I do to others, that there are MANY different kinds of nurses in all roles-that impact patient care “behind the scenes”. I do know, having performed this role for over 3 years now, that IF I ever did go back to floor nursing, my attitude would be totally different. My assessment skills-looking at the entire clinical picture of the patient and recognizing impending issues, and clinical signs would be SO MUCH more proficient. I feel like this job has made me a BETTER nurse!
To add to your message. We LOVE our HIM staff and know what a valued role they play with our department. We use Claro/CDR2 and it has allowed us to develop an “US” mentality, rather than a “We”, “they” mentality. OUR HIM staff are so intelligent and provide a valuable resource and asset that complements our CDI program!
