Cerner

For Cerner users- has anyone used Intelligent Medical Objects (IMO) or tried to justify obtaining the addition for documenting diagnoses? I am trying to work on yet another project:)

We are about to do a system wide Cerner implementation. As of yet they
tell us they have no CDI component but are partnering with JA Thomas
Associates. They say it will be built in a year or two.

As part of our move toward a full electronic record our facility (IT) has purchased IMO to assist the physicians with their documentation of diagnoses. I have been playing around with it and I think it is too easy for a physician to select a non-specific diagnosis and feel it will be create the need to query even more frequently than we do now. A lot depends on how the physician searches for a diagnosis depending on the choices offered. Many times there are way too many choices and the physician will have to search or scroll to find the specific narrative, which I really don't see them taking the time to do and then most likely selecting the first choice in the list which is usually the non-specific code. Other codes don't have the specificity needed and few have I-10 terminology built in so using this as a tool to prepare for I-10 isn't helpful. I think it is a great tool for physician offices and outpatient billing, but have my reservations about its value for inpatient documentation.

I would be very interested in hearing from others who may have IMO already in use - particularly for inpatient documentation- to see how this has impacted their facility coding, etc.

If you get a chance to demo the product ask to see "CHF" searched -- I got instant chest pain when I saw it.
