Practical Questions for National Conference in San Diego

As I am finalizing my plans for the National Conference in San Diego, I have a few questions:

Transportation from Airport to downtown – I will be flying in ~2:30-3:30pm PST on Wednesday May 9 (my b-day!). I see that there are several methods to get downtown (I am staying at a hostel) ($65 for a private room! Shared bathroom). One can take a taxi - $$$, bus, or an option is the several shuttles offered by private companies. One in particular is veteran owned and will transport 4 people from the airport to downtown for $14 TOTAL! I have no problems walking the ½ mile from the conference hotel to my hostel… so, who is arriving near the same time and wants to share the transportation expense downtown? I catch a flight back out after 10pm on Saturday so I can sleep most of the trip back to DC; anybody wish to share transportation expenses that day as well?

Saturday sightseeing – any good low cost suggestions? Like bicycling, hiking, used bookstores/collectible/thrift stores. I know the beach is not too far and may consider an inexpensive sea kayak tour at the sea caves of La Jolla and then check out the gliderport.

Bicycle Transportation around San Diego – I found one bicycle rental place with reasonable bicycle rental prices. Does anybody know how safe it is to bicycle around town? Is there a website with safe bike routes?

As always – Restaurant.com and other online coupons. Any suggestions as to coupons/companies, inexpensive dining?

Thanks in advance for the assistance

    Hi Mark,
I won’t be arriving or departing during those times but am looking for a shuttle back and forth. Father and one brother were in the military and another currently in the Army. Do you have the contact info for the veteran owned shuttle???

I will have my car there and be there for the icd 10 bootcamp. I could make a run to the airport to "shuttle" after the bootcamp on wednesday- probably at about 5-6. Let me know if anyone is interested. You can contact me at Melinda.scharf@stjoe.org

Don’t know what hotels you are staying at but many of them offer free shuttle service to and from the airport. As far as getting around downtown and for little expeditions, they have an inexpensive trolley system that will take you to quite a few places.

Just a practical tip for those who won't get the conference paid for by their organization: I piecemeal the costs since it usually runs about $2200 total - basically putting aside about $200 a month. When I have enough saved, I book and pay off flight, pay off conference until paid off, use what's left for hotel, meals, etc. That way it doesn't seem like sooo much. AND, if your organization decides to pay---you have already started saving for the following year:) . Also don't forget to sign up for the conference early so you get all the discounts!!

My Hubby and I will be staying for a week after the conference... still trying to decide on a hotel (sighhh...) Anyone have any suggestions for nice, reasonable hotel that is in a safe place, convenient to the beach, Universal studies, and the Hollywood Sign?? Wanted to rent a Jeep, but could only one place that rented them and they are booked up! I also want to do some other "must see" attractions, so I will be checking out the links you guys listed in an earlier post! See you there!- V

Do you plan on staying in SD or moving up the coast? Universal Studios and the Hollywood Sign are about 130 miles north of SD - and the drive can take quite a while depending on traffic. Don't know that you need a jeep but a convertible might be nice if the weather is agreeable. Anaheim (Disney, Knott's, etc) is 90-100 miles north.

San Diego is really great for visiting. The beach of course....
The San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park, Coronado, Sea World, Padres, casinos nearby, Seaport Village is fun with the street performers, touristy shops, Scripps, LaJolla, Mission Bay, sea-doo, kayak and canoe rentals - the list goes on and on...

I don't know what you consider reasonable, but good luck..... I work down there quite a bit on weekends and they set me up at hotels. Sea World Hampton Inn is close to everything, has free parking but is not cheap. There's a Days Inn on Hotel Circle that I have heard is reasonable. Make sure you ask about parking -many places have very little and charge daily for what is available.

Enjoy your stay - SD is GREAT!

  • You could stay at a hostel in Downtown San Diego with reasonable parking next door (they told me ~$15) (Lucky D's). It is a little more than
