There is no code for the term 3rd spacing as this is not a recognized disease in ICD - one would code any consequences of 3rd spacing, such as hyponatremia. You would also code the etiology, such as ascites, bowel obstruction, burn, pancreatitis, peritonitis, and so forth.
3rd spacing must be documented as having caused compartment syndrome, otherwise the rules preclude one from reporting compartment syndrome. It 'usually' involves swelling from the accumulation of fluid in an 'abnormal compartment', but the condition of compartment syndrome can't be assumed.
