Head Injury

edited May 2016 in Pediatrics
I need some help understanding the DRG for a scenario we don't see much at my facility. I had a 12 year old boy come in from an accident with a "head injury" from the trauma. It was documented that he had a loss of consciousness of unspecified duration. He was conscious on arrival and spent the night in ICU. H & P lists the following diagnoses: 1. Head injury 2. Concussion 3. Loss of Consciousness. I thought it would go to code 959 for the closed head injury but our coder says it goes to 850 for concussion. I am trying to understand why.

Thanks for any feedback you can give.

  • If you have an ICD-9 coding book, look up code 959. Under excludes it states excludes concussion (850.1-850.9) with head injury NOS (850.1-850.9)
