general question for all on list

As a member of ACDIS and subscriber to CDI Talk, I would like to ask a
question.

I am employed by a critical access hospital. Myself and others in
billing and coding have noticed a disconnect between our separate
processes and uniting the whole picture for compliance and accuracy. As
a critical access hospital, we do not bill under DRG's, we use CPT and
ICD 9 codes. My current role is ICU manager, but I have been involved in
multiple coding and billing renovations at this facility. I am looking
to apply the principles of CDI to the critical access hospital by means
of E & M review and ICD 10 preparation. Has anyone else started a CDI
program in the critical access hospital setting?

  • Valerie,
Have you tried connecting with anyone from Kindred Hospital? I have met some of the CDI folks from Kindred at the SanDiego Convention. They may be able to assist you.

    Valerie,
I know about a critical access hospital that utilized an RN as a chart auditor. She worked on different audits, billing discrepancies, physician office billing, and surgical procedure billing. She would also write any appeals that were necessary. I work very closely with our RN chart auditor at our facility. Many times, such as RACs, we are collaborative.

    Thanks,
    Kathy
