A Suggested Benchmark Idea
Has anyone, or does anyone know, of an approach toward benchmarking where one looks at the percentage / rates / rations of occurances of specific ICD-9 codes?
There are several examples that occur to me:
*CHF vs specificity (428.0 vs all others)
*DM -- 250.0 vs various with manifestations codes
*ARF vs ATN (and what about renal insufficiency)
*CDK unspec vs staged CDK
There will likely be many more examples with ICD-10 ... as well as other good examples with ICD-9.
The value of doing this seems to be as a measure of the quality of documentation specificity.
There might well be value with internal trending...the challenge is with finding a good data source for a comparative benchmark. For a major academic medical center involved with UHC -- the data source is there. For others? no idea where the data might be available.
Thoughts?
