How do other cdi programs with EMR provide notification of queries?

How are other CDI programs with EMR provide notification of queries to the physicians and what is the scope of information in the notification. (is the pt information put in a text page or diagnosis included?) any information will be helpful. Thank you

We send queries either verbally or via email (written). Those sent by email are sent securely using encryption per policy. The email is not in the EMR. Verbal queries follow the same format as the written/email queries.

I hope this helps a little.

  • Thank you. Do you text the MD's to notify them of a query and if you do what information is included in the text page?

  • We don't text the providers that they have a query. If I send them an unencrypted email all it says is that they have a pending query. Nothing more. Anything more than that, including the patients name could be considered a privacy violation.

We have EPIC and we place the query in the providers In Basket in a folder labeled "Coding Follow-Up". We then send them an e-mail stating we are following pt X and have reviewed their record and have sent a query to their In Basket to a folder labeled "Coding Follow-Up". We had hoped this e-mail notification would be short lived as our providers learned our EMR but that has not proven to be the case. After 20 months we are still having to send the e-mail notification as not all the providers use their In Basket well.

  • Our queries are a PowerNote in Cerner. They are a part of the permanent record and are sent to the physicians Inbox in Cerner. Therefore, our queries have all the pt information, clinical indicators from the record, etc.. We just implemented this system this summer and we are still struggling a bit to get MD's to respond quickly, but we hope over time, the process becomes more streamlined.
