abscess and diabetic manifestations

Good morning all,

I recently saw a brief message about an absces as a diabetic manifestations. I think I saw it on the ACDIS facebook site which I can not access at work.

Does anyone have any information on quering if an abscess is a manifestation of diabetes? Is so, what criteria do you use?

Thanks.

Personally I don't see an abscess as a manifestation of diabetes. Even if it was caused by insulin injections, an abscess is normally the result of an infectious process. Diabetes can complicate the healing of an abscess and maybe even make someone more prone to complications from one. But I can't get my mind to say that an abscess is a manifestation of diabetes.

Retinopathies, nephropathies, and neuropathies, yes. Abscess, no.

I agree completely Robert but we just had a chart in which an abscess was linked as a diabetic manifestation so, now we are wondering if this is a query opportunity that we have been missing.

To me it’s a question to ask the provider who wrote the note and ask how they came to that conclusion, or if you have a physician advisor go over the case with them and get their thoughts. If I had one of my providers here do that I would be asking how they came to that conclusion. It’s always worth the intellectual discussion.
