surgical complications

Good morning - as usual, I was able to get a whole bunch of information from the ACDIS website on surgical complications but was wondering if anyone has actually done education with their surgeons e.g. presentations at surgical meeting or flyers breaking down some of the nuances of complication coding?

Thank you,

  • Yes: I have a PowerPoint and I will send to you. It is too large for the ACDIS site, apparently.

    Paul,
I think it would be good to just send it to the CDI talk...Sure you thought of that based on the response, cause I really want the presentation as well.
    THANKS!

Any chance I could get a copy of that power point. We dont have
anything like you are speaking about. The surgeons only seemd confused
    or skeptical about coding

  • Most welcome. As I have stated earlier, the documentation and coding of 'complications' is both technically difficult and often misunderstood. These presentations are fairly 'simple' and not meant to provide a complete overview on this complicated topic.

I'd query. It would be a good educational opportunity for the surgeon if he feels they were not inherent to the procedure.

I would query. I think the air leak may or may not be significant and is seen frequently with thoracotomy. A fracture which occurs during surgery (iatrogenic)is coded to 998.89.
