In basket use for CDS queries in EPIC

Our CDS program just started using 3M-CDIS last December and our hospital went to EPIC this past Monday. We are using the In basket to send CDS queries to the physicians. I am seeking contacts for advice and suggestions on leaving queries in EPIC. Any information you can share will be very helpful.

Thank you,
Julie

  • We went live with 3MCDIS one year ago and EPIC in May 2011. I'd be happy to share our process off-line, as well.

How is that working for everyone as we were told that it is not part of the permanent medical record when using the in-basket? We actually go through coding and use query tab in coding info to retro query. If it is concurrent we use the sticky note and if we don't get a response from a clinician within 48 hrs we contact them through their in-basket to let them know they have a sticky note in the chart that needs to be responded to in their progress note.

The in-basket for me works better than the sticky notes did, although I have one hospitalist who said to only put his queries in the sticky notes and then he doesn't read them. The problem w/ the in-basket is that they still don't always answer the query. One physician has told me that he can actually delete it prior to reading it and on my side it will say pending so I always thought it had been read. The hospitalists have also told me that when they open it and read it but can't answer right away they sometimes forget to go back and document. For the most part it works pretty good. Sometimes I have to requery or do a verbal query.
