My "aha" moment

I have been a CDI for almost 5 years now and have accomplished some things I can be proud of. I have my certification and with starting a local ACDIS chapter that brought me some satisfaction. All of that being said, I can't really say that I have done anything with the job itself that is anything outstanding. And from where I sit, that would be about revenue.
So I would like to know if there are any particular projects that people have developed that really made the powers that be take notice.
I regularly follow this sight and have seen many projects, ie death chart reviews, educational fliers, etc. I look at the metrics and I know we are doing a good job, just wonder if there is that one thing that changed your practice with a BOOM!

We hold a quarterly CDI Leadership meeting with the majority of the top administrators and directors. CFO, COO, another CxO, CNO, HIM director, Quality Mngt director, VP medical affairs: Chief Medical Director, Corporate Compliance Officer, Director Case Mngt, the CDI team, and some other Sr VPs and VPs that I can't name off the top of my head. Anyway, it really got us noticed and allows us to toot our horn, discuss any issues and possible strategies. They like to see how the Query Log looks and who is and isn't answering queries. We also review PEPPER data and traditional Medicare CMI as well as present any new education we have provided or plan to provide to the physicians such as articles, documentation tips, brochures, etc - many are things that people have provided here or that we have created ourselves.
It's helped create more cohesiveness within the hospital. I can't hide anymore, because they all know my name and face and I've learned not to be surprised at who is on the other end of the line whenever I answer my phone. It's been absolutely fantastic for the program, although I must admit, my natural instincts are to fly under the radar!

  • I suggest you report on the Observed/Expected Mortality Metric - this can provide concrete verification that CDI has positively affected a very important Quality Metric.

Do we track this metric? Sounds like it might be a good idea. I like the suggestions given for meeting with senior leadership.

There is no way at this point in time they we can start tracking this.
Maybe later when we have more staff.

  • The O/E is not something the CDI tracks as a metric - it should be a Metric tracked by your Quality Team. Our CDI team does not directly (manually) generate the O/E - no CDI team would do so.

I really wanted to get into the mortality data but our Quality Management department does this. I would love to know what our numbers are, but it's not shared with me.

I'm very glad we started the Leadership meetings. We hold it in the admin boardroom and the first one only about 7 showed up, then second meeting, only us. The third, only us again so our VP asked me who all accepted the meeting request. I told her everyone had and she then went office to office and got all of admin who had been invited to come into the boardroom plus phoned those who's offices weren't in admin. We have had a packed house ever since. One administrator even asked to be included! I am very grateful to my VP for doing that:)
