CDS and utilization?

Good morning-

I am wondering if there are any programs out there in which CDS staff also do UR, such as determining appropriate level of care- observation versus inpatient. If anyone out there is doing this, what kind of model or workflow do you use?

Thanks!
Robin

We did this for 7 years here at my hospital. In 2008, we separated the
CDI and UR functions. Since then, we've had nurses dedicated to each
role. It did not work at all for us to combine the two functions. UR
always had to take precedence, so CDI got pushed to the back burner. I
think there is a tendency to understaff when the roles are combined.
Plus, it is a very different focus and skill set.

    I would recommend against it.
