Encoder and APR-DRG Grouper for SOI/ROM

I went to Chicago and got so excited about putting the focus right where it belongs on SOI/ROM! I learned at some of the sessions, how others used the APR-DRG Grouper to do mortality reviews, and check on SOI/ROM for all patients in CCUs/ICUs. Also for long LOS. They even were able to give individual physician report cards! I want these tools because I feel showing the physicians that information on their patients concurrently will get them onboard much faster. Especially if you've had the discussion and then can show the final DRG after billing. Helps to show them how you are there to translate their medical documentation into coding language!

Having trouble convincing the powers that be what could be accomplished! Anyone else have the encoder or the encoder + APR-DRG Grouper? Can you tell me how you would be affected if you were to lose those tools? Thanks!

I have 3M. I use common things I see. Electrolyte imbalance, chronic hypoxia, renal insufficiency. I code those diagnoses and then I code hyponatremia, chronic respiratory failure, etc. I also use this product to provide education to nursing regarding LOS and reimbursement. I have found that most our nurses are cut loose on the floor without an understanding of how their documentation can impact reimbursement for present on admission. I also discuss CMI with them and how we determine that. Our nurses now have the tools to see their role in length of stay, what LOS is, what a DRG is, and why a timely discharge is necessary if the patient is ready. This is a great tool for your organization!

Thanks for the information. We are looking into this software and
hopefully they will find it in our budget to purchase it.

Our Hospital has 3M, they have recently set me up to access. I am still wadding my way thru to learn how it can help me in the new CDI position. Any hints appreciated.

The encoder will be your best friend. This will help you with the terminology the coders need to code in many cases what the physician is describing. You will have query opportunities to get the correct terminology.

We are currently in the process of getting the APR-DRG grouper.

I also use 3M and have used it for many years in other positions. Besides helping you know of other questions you can ask for clarifications, the APR-DRG (an extra add on to the 3M-more cost) shows you how clarifications in documentation can affect severity of illness and risk of mortality. A person knows there is an effect, but to actually see the numbers change, sometimes in unexpected ways, is a valuable tool for a CDIS team. I can't say enough good about it and hope your company will decide the cost is well worth it.
