Accelerated HTN

I know there is a difference between Accelerated HTN and Malignant HTN. I would like to develop a query for Accelerated HTN that includes the correct criteria with a good reference. There are occasions when patients recieve IV anti-hypertensive medications to prevent organ damage without cerebral damage or papilledeman. They have chest pain/angina. I do know that Accelerated/Malignant HTN code the same. Any ideas?

We changed our query to separate accelerated and malignant HTN into two categories based on feedback from the residents, (see attached) and the response rate improved dramatically!
Now we try to get feedback from physicians regarding all our queries :)

  • This is what we use.

  • I'm confused. I understand there is a difference between accelerated and malignant hypertension, but when I run them through the encoder it gives me the same code.

  • Yes, they both will give you the same code, an CC. But when the MD has only stated it as uncontrolled Hypertention, hypertensive urgency, or hypertensive emergency and the clinical indicators are there to support greater severity, we query for the specificity of accelerated or malignant.

    Does that makes sense?

It does code out the same. They are different though-in severity.

Yes I do that to but I would like to make a printed query. At this point in time it is a hand written query with no reference and the Physicians always think of malignant HTN and that their patient is not that ill. I do understand what you are saying.

Thanks for your query form. Yes I know it is a CC. I am having a difficult time getting physicians to document the difference. I appreciate your help.
