GCS in I-10

Hi all!
Are you aware of how your facility will be capturing GCS in I-10. My draft coding manual states that these codes are intended for use in trauma but may be picked up in other patients as well. When I attended the AHIMA I-10 training they mentioned that coders may not pick up these codes consistently and that different facilities may set different expectations. Some of these are MCC’s. Do you know what your facility will be doing? Will you be asking MD’s to document GCS and have you spoke to your coding department about it?

Thanks!

    Hi Katy!

Haven't gotten through all my I-10 training. Can you tell me what the acronym GCS stands for? It appears it would be something we might want to investigate.

    Katy,
Thanks for asking this question. It made me actually go out and look the proposed CC/MCC list more closely.
I found that just listing the GCS score codes R40.241 - R40.2444 are not cc or mcc it has to be the individual eye, verbal or motor scoring. Is this your understanding also?
If so I know we may have some issues with some services.

  • Yes, the MD has to break out the individual scores. This is why it is tricky. We will have to educate our trauma service and the rest of the MD's on this but when I took my AHIMA training, the trainers suggested that not all facilities would be encouraging coders to utilize these codes. That they may only use them on traumas, etc. However, they can be applied on anyone. I will be asking our coding manager what her expectation will be but I am also curious what the 'standard' will be. There is no point in providing all the education, modifying templates, etc to capture this data if the coders will not be picking it up.

  • We have modified templates to reflect the needed documentation for ICD-10. Epic users may have it already built into the newer templates by Epic.
  • Have you asked your coding dept if they will be picking up this code across the board or only with traumas?

    Thanks!
