CDI Books in 2014

Since you guys are my "go-to" group for advice, here I am again...
We are bringing some book ideas through and wondering what you think about a CDI training manual. A spiral bound book that would give to new CDI specialists it would have quizzes and games and cover the CDI basics.
We're also thinking about a CDI Handbook for physician advisors based on the physician advisor preconference.
Thoughts? Opinions?

I think that both are great ideas and are extremely important and needed. One of the issues that I face is the fact that things are changing so fast, it is hard to keep our manuals up to date. If there was a place that provided and updated training materials and information, that would be an awesome thing. Happy CDI Week to all and what a great week it has been!

    Thanks,

    Mark ☺

Great ideas! I would be the first in line for the physician advisor book. :) Linnea Thennes

  • I agree with Mark that is difficult to keep such a manual current, but I believe there now exists enough core areas of knowledge regarding clinical and compliance topics that such a manual would be valuable.

    I really like that idea.
I am posting 3 new CDI positions this fall. It is daunting to train that many people at once still be alert to different learning styles and needs.
I've created a reasonable orientation guide, but what you are discussing here would take that much farther.
Let us know when it's available!

  • Yes! I would love something that describes the 'big picture'. How new HC initiatives impact healthcare, quality data, etc. I find its pretty basic to teach the nuts and bolts to new-hires. Additionally, there are resources to help with this (bootcamps, etc). But I want my staff to have the overall picture, know who/what we impact and how we can work interdisciplinarily with other departments to the benefit of the hospital.

  • I love this. We have our own binder but it is nearly as thorough as it could be. Awesome idea!!!

  • I am particularly interested in anything describing the value and return on investment impact that CDI and data have upon quality metrics, such as mortality, risk-adjusted outcomes, readmissions, VBP, and so forth. I think a key to credibility and success is to concentrate on improved data for the sake of quality. But, it can be difficult to absorb some of the CMS initiatives.

  • YES & YES !!

I've shared with Mark D and Katy Good an outline of (mostly) clinical topics with some reference/resources that might be a useful starting point (hurry off to remove the 'serial' numbers). Might be helpful.

There are a couple of other orientation programs that sounded quite good -- UNC was featured not too long ago in the Journal. I'd encourage anyone that has an orientation program, outline, materials, etc. consider donating to the cause.

I'd like to suggest reaching out to full time physician advisors for ideas.
With my new role (Manager, Clin Doc Advisor Programs) I am focusing on our physician advisors and even more working directly and closely with medical staff. Might be some insight as I get further into this role.

The strategies and knowledge needed for a PA share some commonality for a CDS but there are also significantly unique skills.

As Katy mentioned, something that focuses on both 'big' picture & on breaking areas to help get ahead would be great. Though that might be a new project (advanced CDI?).

Ensure a focus on the fundamentals -- core knowledge, compliance, industry trends -- as Paul references should be the foundation for both books.

Suspect these might need to be released annually ...

A key component would need to be an extensive "reference" list with links (or via password access to a web site).

Sounds great to me! Just wish we had money in the budget. Will members get a discount since many of us will be buying these with our own money?

    I would love that idea!!!

  • The ideas below are fabulous. A resource book would be a great advantage to any program.

I have recently hired and trained 3 new CDIs and have created a reference book for their training.

It is generic and illustrates the "big picture" as mentioned below. I would be happy to share, just let me know where to send the information.
    Thank you,

  • Thanks everyone! Much appreciated feedback. We were thinking that we would keep the CDI Specialist's Handbook and then create both a training handbook for new CDI and a more advanced CDI handbook for CDI managers and those looking to expand their scope of practice.
The physician advisor book I am little worried about it doing well since most facilities are lucky to have a PA, now try to get him/her to sit down and read a book about CDI?
I'll definitely reach out to those of you who had specific suggestions in a separate email.
    Thanks again!

  • Understand in regards to selling to physician advisors themselves -- but I was actually thinking of the market for that book to be as much or more focused toward CDI managers, advanced CDI's, etc. -- who would use it as a resource when working with a physician advisor AND would use it to support their work directly with physicians -- whether or not they had a PA available to them. [similar to why I have a copy of "Optimizing the Physician Advisor in Case Management" -- I am not in CM, but found enough use if that book to make it worthwhile]

Selling the book to a PA is more of a bonus than the core audience.

    just 2 cents ...

  • PLEASE DO!!! I have not worked as a documentation specialist for approx. 2 years now and I am preparing to go for my CCDS certification so I can get back in to CDI. I have the 2012 CCDS exam study guide, 2011 CDI Pocket Guide, and my old CDI notebook.
Hummmm, maybe I should wait to take the exam after the 2014 books are published!! I think not, but anyway I think it is a great idea and would make learning fun, as it should be!!!
    Thank You

  • That is a great idea! We also have hired 3 more employees who are scheduled to start their orientation this next Monday. I have a tentative schedule planned for their orientation for 8 weeks which does include the online boot camp, but I still would appreciate any feedback on what are some specifics you discuss on your orientation. Seeing as how I still feel like a newbie myself!
  • Whoops! Sorry I forgot I wasn't typing this thru my email and automatically adding my signature line.
