Valid concern – key will be to use ‘good judgement’ if/when one issues a query for confirmation. If it is not reportable, agree no need to query.

Understand why MD would be frustrated – equally frustrating for me to see the potential risk exposure for a facility and/or coder that can sometimes be produced by inconsistent documentation. Valid responsibility for MD to partner with us and acknowledge Marcus Welby died a long time ago.


Yes – introduces additional pressures and responsibilities upon any coder to exercise good clinical review judgement.

The bar has been raised, indeed, for coders and CDI. See my previous rants regarding low pay and visibility for coding profession and call for all coders to have formal A&P, Pathophysiology, Microbiology, Clinical Pharmacology, et a….MANY coders do have that level of education, and it does make a difference.
