average length of stay with associated DRG

Hello there...We have a length of stay (LOS) initiative here at our facility and our Hospitalists wondered if there was a way for us (Case Management or the CDS) to communicate the associated ‘average’ LOS with the working DRG.
Does anyone happen to know of any resources that could help us with this?
Thank you!

If you have the DRG Expert it gives you GMLOS and AMLOS with each DRG.

We utilize the JATA software and it computer the GLOS. We still have a paper chart (partial) so we write this on the front of the chart as
EDOD (expected date of dc) as an actual date.

When we go fully electronic, we will have to use a different plan.

If you have a DRG expert, GMLOS, AMLOS and Relative Weight are listed below each DRG.
www.cms.gov has this information in an excel spreadsheet. See link below

We use Epic as our EHR. We developed a flowsheet where we can enter the working MS DRG and GLOS and Working APR DRG and ALSO. We are able to update these if the working DRG changes.
It is not a permanent part of the medical record. It is visible to all - Case Management and Physicians. We have only implemented this in our Children's hospital at this time but have the capability of expanding it to adult. Since the CDI is already in the EHR it is not very time consuming. We have dual monitors so they can work in the CDI system as well as the EHR.

If you have an EHR work with your team to leverage technology. It can be a wonderful asset. Beats extra emails and phone calls.

Prior to Epic we left a copy of our paper worksheet on the front of the chart and coding removed it at discharge. The information was capture there.

Table 5 (DRG listing from CMS) from the CMS website has the geometric and arithmetic mean LOS for each DRG. I have attached a copy or it can be found at:

Just re-read your email and think I was on the wrong track.

We have Meditech and we set it up to pull that information from abstracting onto the physician's rounding report. It could be pulled from elsewhere but feel ABS is the most accurate since it is updated to match most recent documentation of conditions and procedures.

  • I would caution that some MD's might keep patients longer when the GLOS is posted. Our UR Dept. used to post a working DRG with LOS about 22 years ago but found that some physicians tried to keep longer because the LOS was not yet reached.
