Respiratory Diagnosis Definitions
Hello,
Our CDI team is fairly new and we are still working on establishing criteria for certain diagnoses. One area our facility is struggling with is acute respiratory failure. We find that this diagnosis is often hit or miss: over-charted (when criteria isn't met) or no respiratory dianosis is provided at all. We wanted to help provide the docs with alternative respiratory diagnosis options when patient's aren't quite to the level of failure. We are looking to establish definitions for:
--Acute respiratory distress
--Acute respiratory/pulmonary insufficiency
--Post op/post trauma respiratory failure
--Post op respiratory insufficiency
--(Intubated for airway protection not respiratory failure)
We are having trouble finding clear cut criteria or definitions for these diagnoses. Does anyone have and advice or good resources we could use???
Thanks!!

Also, review the ACDIS Journal from July 20113, "Defining and diagnosing acute respiratory failure".
There is a wonderful resource from Paul Evans -- in Forms & Tools, Physician Eduction, "CDI Training: Respiratory Failure"
There are likely several other good resources in the F&T's library.
