Gustilo Anderson fracture

Good morning! Does anyone have any information on the upcoming ICD-10 Gustilo Anderson Fractures (scale) they would be willing to share?

Thanks!

  • Open fracture designations are based on the Gustilo open fracture classification and describe the extent of soft tissue injury:

I - Low energy, wound less than 1 cm
II - Greater than 1 cm with moderate soft tissue damage
III - High energy wound greater than 1 cm with extensive soft tissue damage
IIIA - Adequate soft tissue coverage
IIIB - In adequate soft tissue coverage
IIIC - Associated with arterial injury

We were told the physician doesn't have to document the actual Gustilo score. The coder is able to review the documentation and determine the appropriate score. The coder must assign the appropriate ICD-10-CM 7th character based upon the description.
All fractures require a 7th character which identifies the episode of care and healing status.
    Closed fractures use: A, D, G, K, & P.
    Open fractures use: B, C, E, F, H, J, M, N, Q, & R.
Both closed and open fractures use S for sequela.

If you have access to an ICD-10-CM code book, look in the tabular at S72 Fracture of femur to see the list of 7th character descriptions.

    Hope this helps.
