Physician Software use statistics
Good morning! I was at a meeting last night for our medical executive team and the point was brought up that our current software system (Siemens Soarian) is out of date and inefficient for documentation and ICD 10. Our hospital currently doesnt even have the update that would allow the physicians to document directly in Soarian so we have a homemade software program that they currently document in. The problem is that they have to free hand their Dx. All of our doctors want to know if they can have a system implemented that allows the doc to write a Dx and then the system prompts them for additional information to complete the Dx. I.E. CHF, then prompts for acute/chronic and diastolic/systolic. I believe EClinicalWorks does this which a lot of our docs use in their offices.
The question I have is two fold. One, is there currently systems out there that allow the physician to document that way in an inpatient setting and what are they? And second, does anyone have statistics as to how much the documentation improved when they implemented a system like that (before vs. after) that I could show our administrative team. I know our system is outdated, but I am going to need statistics to back me up to try and get a new more user friendly system. Any help or information would be great. Thank you!

We use Cerner. We have an add on product called Intelligent Medical Objects or IMO. It does provide specificity. I was able to get the software approved by comparing the terminology in Cerner and the loss of specificity of just a few conditions based on the number of times those few diagnoses were documented the previous year.
