metrics to measure efficacy of ICD 10 physician education

What metrics are you going to monitor to measure the efficacy of physician ICD 10 education?

Our organization is looking for metrics which can be used to compare how medical providers are doing with their ICD 10 compliant documentation after we complete ICD 10 educational training for them and then 6 months or so after the training takes place. One physician leader thought a good metric might be the number of clinical documentation queries, noting the expectation would be that we would initally see a rise in the volume of clarifications followed by a a decrease in volume of clarifications as physicians better understand the new documentation requirements of ICD 10.

Please share your thoughts on metrics whcih could be used to measure efficacy of physician ICD 10 training.

  • Are you talking about pre-implementation?

We will be doing manual audits of a handful of high-risk/high volume dx (ex: MI) that we are focusing in on. I am a bit hesitant to use overall query volume as a metric because we regularly see shifts in documentation that lead to an ebb/flow of required queries. However, if you have a way to track specific queries, that would be more helpful.

  • One more thing, If your facility is duel coding in I-10 you will be able to capture impact in a more meaningful way. Our coding department is not really duel coding yet, so this is a limitation we are dealing with. We hope that they will be duel-coding soon though and will be using their coding to monitor progress (hopefully).
