Education Role

edited May 2016 in CDI Talk Archive
Random thought, and would probably apply only to larger programs &/or facilities.

Does anyone have a staff member who is either partially or fully dedicated to education?
Education might be aimed at CDS, coders, physicians, etc.
Education might be formal presentations (for CEU/CME), informal feedback &/or auditing, research and communication on a hot topic, response to specific requests from any source, arranging for an outside source, etc.
Is this person shared with coding, or incorporated within the CDI program?

Love to hear thoughts at least, would especially like to hear from anyone that has such a role.

Thanks,
Don

I don't know how you do it all Robert!
If my impression is correct -- you are a one person shop conducting concurrent reviews & queries, develop and deploy materials to providers (including a regular newsletter), individual & group education....

    My hat's off to you!

No role completely dedicated but I serve in that capacity when needed.

  • Organization and working in a small facility helps a lot. I just consider it part of the job but don't do as much as I would like. I'm always looking for increasing efficiencies and finding smarter ways to do things.

Plus I have all the great people here to throw my questions at!

We're licensed for 250 beds w/ 2.0 RN FTEs for CDS. The educator would
be me. I develop the content, develop forms, go to practice meetings to
propose collaborative projects to save us all time and effort. We go to
section meetings, and I sit on several quality committees in the
hospital. In the meantime, I do half of the reviews.

I'd be more than anxious to hear how others do this. We have no manager
or coordinator for the CDI program individually. We report to the
Director of Clinical Quality which includes everything from Medical
Staff Services to UR and regulatory visits. Not much time for support
there, but she does the best she can. I just plow on and ask forgiveness
    and/or permission after the fact!!

I am the only CDI for approximately 150 beds. I am responsible for physician and nursing education. I present most of the nursing education during their unit meetings and hoping to be able to have education for them on our netlearning. I am part of the RACs team and provide clinical arguments. I have additional tasks that medical staff request from me that I have to audit (it helps me to get their collaboration). I have been asked to give a presentation at a satellite nursing school regarding documentation. I really enjoy the education piece and I am greatful for the opportunity. If I by doing multiple things, I have learned so much more than I ever expected from this career.
