Acute Respiratory Failure
Ok, I have thoroughly confused myself so am now reaching out for support.
I am currently putting together some educational materials on Acute Respiratory Failure that will be provided to both CDI and coding in an effort to identify these patients and clarify prior to dropping these records.
I am attempting to come up with rather simple criteria for everyone to use. In the past I have always used the criteria that they need 2/3 of the following :
1. Respiratory Distress
2. pO2 < 60mmHg
3. pCO2 >50mmHg
Obviously this can be determined with an ABG or by calculating your P02 based on room air sat (SpO2).
However, at one of the ACDIS presentations (day 1: IPPS FY final rule) Dr. Pinson provided a definition that included these critera but also included P/F ratio
