Suprapubic Catheters
Hello All- I need some information about uti's associated w/ indwelling devices.
I could swear I recently read "not" to query for a link btwn a uti and suprapubic catheter. I can't find my resource and am wondering if I misinterpreted information.
I know to query for uti associated w/ an indwelling f/c or other device.
Please share your thoughts. Thanks so much Charlene Barnes, RN, CCDS

I typically will query for this when pt has a suprapubic catheter and UTI and there isn't a clear link by the physician. Perhaps you are thinking about a patiet who self-caths, as that device would not be considered truly indwelling? But even in that case, the UTI could be caused by poor hygiene or technique, and I still think you could craft a compliant query to link the UTI with the self-caths, but that could be a different coded scenario, I believe.
I did a search on querying for s/p-related UTI, and found a few references, but nothing absolutely specific to NOT query. Please update if you find your reference you thought guided against querying in this case.
thanks,
