A little whine and jeez

Why does it seem to be that the physicians with the worst documentation, who need the most help, are always the ones who never answer their queries?

The docs who already document well are the ones who pick up on the few times they need to be queried...and they get progressively better because they've learned what we need from the previous queries.

Arrogance, ignorance, stupidity?

Off to bandage the hole in my head caused by beating it against the wall...

  • Hi, Renee

Benign neglect? I think those 'that care' enough to document fairly well w/o any prompting will also be those that respond favorably to a query with integrity. While those that are sloppy probably have traits that make them less likely to respond to even the most complaint and well-written query.

Just my opinion. I try to simply accept the behavior as part of my job. However, you make a good point. As a CDI Supervisor, I do NOT have a 100% 'response rate' as a goal for the team. I do not wish to disparage those that have such a goal, but in my world with a very large health care chain and many independent physicians, such a goal is simply not realistic or anticipated.

I think that all people behave in ways that work for them. Those individuals that don’t answer queries likely don’t collaborate with quality or case management either. They have learned that resistance or ignoring others pays off for them. Often they are on the delinquency list with medical records as well. I have a process to step in to mitigate suspension for delinquencies. With great challenge you often find hidden rewards. Keep your head off the wall and query on☺

  • I would be very interested to hear an anecdotal tale of your process to mitigate suspension for delinquencies with a positive outcome :)
