New Program

CDI is a new program at my facility. I am the only CDIS, and new to it at that. We have a 75 bed hospital, our census is often lower than 30! Often there are only a few charts to review each day. I am wondering if there are any smaller facilities out there with CDIS, and how their program is doing.

  • I work for a facility very similar in size to yours. I have been doing CDI since 2009 at our facility. Please feel free to contact me with any specific questions you have.

Yes ours is a small facility too ( census around 25). I have been in my position (and the only one) since last September and that is how old our program is as well. It is a challenge to get information and education. Thank goodness for ACDIS. There are no other RN/CDI's on the western slope of Colordao at this time. I review all the charts.

  • Oh too funny Elaine! I just moved from Parker, Colorado! Missing it like crazy! May have to turn around and return, but this time up in the mountains a bit. It has been a challenge here also. A small town hospital with doc who have been here for ages, and hospitalists thrown in the mix.
  • Our facility is smaller also, we usually average 60 some patients on the floors, we have 2 CDI, one in training, I have been in this position since starting at our facility in 2009, so yes it is a challenge to learn and find out information...be glad to help in any way...we are still not a Computer assisted CDI program yet so we do hand/chart queries and some retros online, we have some computer charting, but the progress notes are still on the paper chart...
    Thanks,
    Deb

  • Thank you everyone! Was just wondering how many other little ones were out there doing CDI!
  • Our charts are a hybrid. Some orders and progress notes on the chart, come in the computer. All labs and imaging are in the computer. We use meditech. I use written queries at the moment, with plans to go electronic someday. I was also what time frame others use for the initial chart review. I was taught to do this on the 2nd day of admission, which seems to work well. At that time there is a history and physical on the chart and initial labs. I have been looking for things to do, so have done reviews a bit earlier to see it I could catch anything, usually I can't. It's just too early it seems.
  • I work for a large healthcare system and I currently do reviews for inpatient orthopedics unit as well as some beds on our Vascular PCU at our Level I Trauma Center. Last year in March, I started piloting the CDI program for our smallest hospital in the system which only has 12 inpatient beds with an average census of around 7. Since June, 2013, the CDI program has been in full swing. We have really good response rates to inquiries at the small facility and I attempt to visit there at least once a month (it is 2 1/2 hours away from my base facility), but we are in constant contact through email and phone.
