Number of Hospitals with CDI Programs-Help?

Hi guys,
It's rare but I come to you wonderful experts to see if any of you remember us reporting on a study that estimated the number of facilities with CDI programs. I feel like it was a joint study with AHIMA and a third party vendor but I keep coming up blank searching for it and I cannot remember in which publication I might have reported it! *Horrible*
Will you let me know if you have any thoughts about this topic, too?
We know we are growing profession but by how much?

  • Found it:
“State of HIM Report” to 293 respondents co-published by AHIMA and TrustHCS revealed the following data:

With this survey, we also hoped to gain insights into the general stage of Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) programs in development among health care facilities. We asked participants to identify whether their facility already has a CDI program established; or, if not, by when they expected to start one. We also wanted to know if this was a function for which they staffed from internal resources or outsourced for development and auditing. We wanted to get a sense for how well they felt their CDI program was working when they had one already operating.

Among those responding to this portion of the survey, we found that 2/3 (66%) report that a CDI program is underway in their facility. Community Hospitals with greater than 350 bed size most often reported having an operational CDI program (96%). Of those facilities that have not yet begun a CDI program, 41% expect to have one started in 2013; and, only 5% reported that there were no plans for starting a CDI program.

The most notable exceptions to this were among Critical Access Hospitals. Only 29% of Critical Access facilities reported having started a CDI program. Furthermore, only 32% of those who do not have an existing CDI program reported having plans for starting one. This may be related to the lack of ICD-10 steering committees among Critical Access Hospitals: a category which they lead. Facilities without an ICD-10 steering committee accounted for 48% of those who do not currently have a CDI program started.
