ICD Implementation

Hi Everyone!

We're finally moving forward with our ICD-10 implementation plan- thank goodness for the delay, right?

Anyway, we've subscribed to Precyse University for our education modules.

Does anyone have a recommended number of hours per week that should be dedicated to ICD-10 training for our coders, CDI and physicians?

If so, what does it look like? Short blocks of time daily, versus longer blocks of time weekly or monthly? Has anyone done intense training of 30-40/week?

Thanks for any shared information.

  • Hi Jillian,

I'm not sure how your modules for training will be set up, but we started our training last year-full force and then with the implementation changes we slowed down. We just started back up, but our modules are very long and intense,(take hours to days to do them), put we are using 3m, so need to see how your modules are going to be to set your time on training most likely. We are doing ours like one CDI at a time. The coders are under different supervision so can't really tell you how they are doing theirs. But it will require overtime and someone to work the floors while you are training, for us you can't do both.
I don't know if this helps, but that is where we are.

Jillian we also did the Precyse education last year, both our CDI and Coding staff did the education many hours, we utilized a scheduling plan and scheduled the coding staff/CDI to do approx. few hours (2-4) 2x weekly alternating which days so we had some control in staffing to keep our AR stable, we also had brought in for the coding side 2 contingent coders for a short period of time.

    hello Jillian,

I have done the ICD 10 training both ways-few hours each evening after cases done and spent 40 hrs in a week going through web based product. I can tell you it is extremely labor intensive and not to says brain rattling to sit for 40 hrs in one week doing a computer program on ICD 10.

I would recommend breaking the sessions into manageable time slots not to exceed 2 hrs time to prevent burn out.
