Bariatric cheat sheet??

Does anyone have some kind of cheat sheet for bariatric patients?? I met with my surgeons and they want to know what secondary diagnoses increase their predicted complication rates.

  • One new code for FY 2011: obesity hypoventilation syndrome (formerly indexed as Pickwickian Syndrome (278.03). This will now be a CC.

Other common conditions I've seen in the bariatric population:

    Type II diabetes
    GERD
    Aspiration syndrome
    Aspiration pneumonitis
    PVD
    Stasis ulcers
Cutaneous thrush (candida of the skin)
Candidiasis of the urogenital area (CC)
    Panniculitis
    Obstructive sleep apnea
    Chronic respiratory failure
    Asthma
    COPD
    UTI

Many are not severity-drivers, but we should always assess for aspiration pneumonia in this population due to the likelihood that patients aspirate due to their GERD and obstructive sleep apnea - their airways are not well-protected if they are recumbent.
