I understand your point. Especially in "why not query that person in the first place". I think that is the best way, in a perfect world. One reason I may not do that is some specialists are just bad at looking at queries, where hospitalists are more used to it.
I think some of it changes as you learn who will try to answer with best effort.
I do not have occasion to do it very often but when I have I do not think it is unethical and it isnt' to challenge. That's all I am saying.
And I agree it may cause the attending to have to be queried to concur.
Along same lines of Don's providers input- I have had response recently. "unable to determine, cardiologist is on case".
In my opinion the ethics issue comes down to intent- ARE you trying to get the answer you want or are you trying to get the most accurate information in the chart.
As always different ways we all see things.
