UTI d/t intermittent catheter

Pt is a paraplegic, chart states she developed a UTI from self-catheterization. Would you take 997.5, urinary complication, or 599.0, UTI, as pdx? I have reviewed coding clinics and done searches and still don't have a definitive answer.

Thx,

Renee

  • We have been using code 996.64 (Due to indwelling urinary catheter (eff. 10/89) followed by 599.0
  • Angela,

Is it actually ok to code an indwelling catheter when it's an intermittent catheter? I just can't find a single reference that leads me where to code a UTI caused by a patient catheterizing herself. 996.64 specifically says indwelling.

    Thx.

  • We use code 996.65 – Infection and Inflammatory Reaction Due to Genitourinary Device, Implant and Graft followed by additional code of 599.0 to identify specified infection.

If the UTI is specifically documented as being due to the self catheterizations, it is correct to use a code from category 996; however, code 996.64 does specifically state due to indwelling urinary catheter which is not the device documented in the above stated scenario. There is not a specific code for infection related to straight catheterizations. Due to the limited specificity in ICD-9-CM, this type of urinary catheter would be grouped with other genitourinary devices under code 996.65

    My opinion, anyway!

  • Thanks, Sharon; I think the 996.65 is probably exactly right.
