CDS competencies
Good Morning everyone,
We are looking at developing annual CDS competencies. Does anyone have any ideas or samples that you are willing to share.
Thanks

Is there a specific local reason (I am not asking for any details), or do you see this as something that you would advocate programs across the country consider?
(presume you are discussing something different from assessing competency during / at completion of orientation).
I've not heard of anyone doing annual competency. My initial thought is I would rather not create an additional process or form to subject yourself to, but rather look at other methods or tools -- some of which I suggest below (hopefully existing, but poll results for some elements like auditing not everyone has in place).
As part of annual performance evaluation, I do incorporate measurable metrics / standards of performance that are specific to CDI role. These do vary slightly given the individual clinical context or other factors -- for example, query rate expectations are different for cardiac vs medical areas & some areas are net transferring out so case volume at discharge is anticipated to be lower, so focus more on % of cases discharged reviewed.
An active audit process (which aims both at compliance issues as well as at evaluation of the work done, missed opportunities, etc.) along with good data collection and analysis should give you a good picture of competence also.
Continuing education could also be used.
Key area to include is updating knowledge related to the annual IPPS Final rule changes and annual Coding Guidelines, as well as the quarterly coding clinics. The bump there is sourcing the education as well as validating the learning -- do you find an external source that you are satisfied with? or do you attempt to do it either internally or individually?

Never give in. Never, never, never, never--in nothing, great or small, large or petty--never give in, except to convictions of honor and good sense. Never yield to force. Never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy

use HFAP instead of JCAHO)asked to see competency records for all
licensed staff regardless of their role in the organization. We didn't
have them for CDS. Now we do.
