malpractice insurance

Good morning,

My husband asked me last night if I want to renew my nursing malpractice insurance. I am curious what other Clinical Documentation Specialists thoughts are regarding carrying insurance? I can't quite make the connection how it would help me in this field but it is kind of like letting go of a "wooby"!

I look forward to your comments. Thanks

Are you covered under your facility's group umbrella? I can't see how you could be sued for any kind of malpractice, although if a pt does file a lawsuit usually anyone who is on the chart is called in and questioned.

I don't carry it. I don't document in the record and only request
clarifications. I don't need see a need for malpractice unless you are
working in a clinical setting providing patient care too.

I don't document in the record and I don't do patient care, so I see no
need for the expense of malpractice insurance. I was always told lawyers
go for the ones who have the malpractice insurance! LOL

  • I didn't renew my malpractice this year, for the reasons others have mentioned, but I have to address Patsy's point: there are two sides to that argument. Yes, lawyers like to go after the deep pockets, but the flip side is that the hospital that is supposedly covering you under the doctrine of respondeat superior will cut you loose in a New York minute if you haven't followed every minutia of every policy, procedure, and standard they can find. Then you and your personal assets are out there, naked, to be picked clean by the lawyers. We are all likely very, very good nurses, but not a single one of us is perfect, and malpractice cases can certainly highlight that. I did not want to take that risk when I was an ICU nurse. $100 or so a year was so worth it to me.

  • I do not carry malpractice insurance. I am not doing patient care or treatments.
