Heart failure in Peds

Hello fellow CDI's.
We are working with our cardiac providers with ICD 10 needs upcoming. In all of the literature and in speaking with some other children’s hospitals, we were told to make sure that we ask for two major things when looking at cardiac charts...(left or right failure, and systolic and or diastolic failure).

Unfortunately, many of our kids are congenital and are all in right side because there is little to no left side of the heart. In addition, unless I am doing something wrong, I am finding that there is no difference in the CMI/SOI when I coded with either failure, or just heart failure unspecified.

I know that requesting and or looking for the CMI to change is not the only reason why we are asking for the change, but in order for me to get this across to my docs, i need more of an incentive to by in.
Any suggestion?

  • This is the greatest news! Maybe now we will finally be able to capture the true SOI/ROM of these kiddos. I can't wait to let our intensivists and cardiologists know. Thank you so much for your hard work and perseverance with this cause.
